Celebrating Eid ul Adha:

Wishing you all a very happy Eid Mubarak

Insha Allah you are all in the best state of health and Imaan. Just a small reminder to recite Allahuma Sallay Ala Muhammadin Abdika Wa Nabiyika Wa Rasoolikan Nabiyyil Ummiyi.  . Also try to recite surah al Kahf on Friday.

 Juwairiyah bint Al-Harith (May Allah be pleased with her) reported, the Mother of the Believers: The Prophet SAW (peace be upon him) came out from my apartment in the morning as I was busy in performing the dawn prayer. He came back in the forenoon and found me sitting there. The Prophet SAW (peace be upon him said, "Are you still in the same position as I left you." I replied in the affirmative. Thereupon the Prophet SAW said, "I recited four words three times after I had left you. If these are to be weighed against all you have recited since morning, these will be heavier. These are: Subhan-Allahi wa bihamdihi, `adada khalqihi, wa rida nafsihi, wa zinatah `arshihi, wa midada kalimatihi [Allah is free from imperfection and I begin with His praise, as many times as the number of His creatures, in accordance with His Good Pleasure, equal to the weight of His Throne and equal to the ink that may be used in recording the words (for His Praise)]."[Sahih Muslim].  Take two minutes to memorise the above and repeat it three times in the morning and in the evening.  And it really does take only two minutes.

 Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar La ilaha illalah

 Wallahu Akbar Allahu Akbar Wa lillahil Hamd

Reminder: The above Takbeer at-Tashreeq is wajib for men to recite, and mustahab for women, at least once after every fardh prayer from Fajr of the 9th of Zulhijjah until Asr time of the 13th of Zulhijjah

We are all getting ready for Eid and for many of us it is simply an excuse to spend lots of money on new clothes and to go around to our family members picking up gifts and money.  We should take this opportunity to thank Allah SWT for the bounties that he has bestowed upon us and try to give some money in charity so that those who are less fortunate that us can participate in Eid with us.  Because we have started to forget the meaning of Eid I thought that it would be good to look at what Eid means for us and how we should celebrate it, remember Eid is a religious festival so we should celebrate it according to Shariah.  We do not want to become like other religions for example the Christians who only see Christmas as a way of picking up bargains in shops and to go out partying and forget that it was intended to celebrate the birth of Prophet Jesus AS.

Before I start to talk about the day of Eid I would like to make a few points about the Qurbani 'sacrifice' that one should perform after one has prayed the Eid Salah.

What is Qurbani?

Qurbani during Eid-ul Adha is an act to commemorate Prophet Ibrahim’s sacrifice as mentioned in the Quraan.

Qurbani in Islamic terms means the slaughtering of an animal with the intention of getting close to Allah (SWT) by giving some or all of the meat to the poor and destitute. Animals that can be sacrificed are goats, cows and camels. They are sacrificed on the day of Eid-ul-Adha and also on the three days after (the 11, 12 and 13th of Dhulhijjah)

Reward of Qurbani

Hazrat Ayesha RadiAllah Anha reports that the Holy Prophet Peace Be upon Him said, “The son of Adam does not perform any action on the day of sacrifice which is more pleasing to Allah than the shedding of blood. He will come on the day of resurrection with its hair, horns and hooves, and the blood certainly will fall in a place near Allah before it falls on the ground. So, make sacrifice with happy heart”. (Tirmizi, Ibn-e- Majah)

Who should give Qurbani

Person who possesses Nisab (zakatable asset) should give Qurbani.  It is not obligatory (fard) but is highly recommended (wajib, very close to Farz), according to the Hanafi school of thought. However, Qurbani is a Sunnah act according to the Shafi, Hanbali, Maliki, and Jafari schools of thought.

Why Celebrate Eid?

 Eid al-Adha is meant to be a recognition the material and spiritual favours of God to His creation, manifested by the ritual slaughtering necessary for all able Muslims to perform, following the sunna (way) of the Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him).

This is a manifestation of total submission to the command of Allah: one submits one’s mind, wealth, and body to the Command and Pleasure of Allah. On this day, Muslims all over the world thank God for the gift bestowed on them.

 The lessons of the way of the Prophet Ibrahim, where, in utter submission to the Divine Command, he was about to slaughter is very own son, until at the last moment Allah sent an animal to be slaughtered instead, are many:

 1) Complete submission to the command of Allah, out of thankfulness, love, and true slave hood. On this day, able Muslims slaughter an animal, whose meat is eating, and distributed to family, friends and the poor, and go early in the day to perform the Eid prayer.

 2) Recognizing one’s blessings and thanking God for them: Muslims are encouraged to wear their best clothes, give gifts (especially to children) and celebrate with family, friends, and neighbours.

 3) Remembering the plight of the poor and giving in charity: On Eid day, it is especially recommended to give in charity.

 In this and other ways, Muslims seek to join between worldly and spiritual celebration, for it is said, “True rejoicing is not (merely) in wearing new clothes, but in becoming true in one’s devotion to Allah.”

 The Prophet (Allah bless him & give him peace) said, “For every people there is a feast and this is our feast.” [Reported by Bukhari in his Sahih]

 The fast of Yowm-e-Arafah – 9th Dhul Hijjah
Hazrat Abu Qataadah al-Ansari RA relates that Rasulullah SAW was asked about the Saum (fast) on the day of Arafah (i.e. the 9th Zil Hijjah). He said, "It compensates for the minor sins of the past year and the coming year." Muslim.

 Rasulullah  SAW has said, "The most acceptable Du'aa is that which is made on the day of Arafah, and the best Du'aa which the Prophets before me, and I have made is:

"There is no Deity besides Allah. He is alone He has no partner. To Him belongs the sovereignty, and unto Him belongs all praise, and He is all powerful." Tirmizi

It is related that Rasulullah  SAW said, "Whoever stays awake and makes Ibaadat on the nights of Eidul Fitr and Eidul Adhaa, his heart will not die on the day when all the hearts will be dead." Targheeb.

 Hazrat Muaaz ibn Jabal  RA relates that Rasulullah  SAW said, "Jannat is Waajib for those who stay awake with the intention of making Ibaadat on the following nights: 8th, 9th and l0th of ZiI Hijjah, the night of Eidul Fitr and the night of the l5th of Sha'baan." Targheeb.

 Is it permissible to Fast on Eid Al-Adha?

It is impermissible and sinful to fast the Two Eid Days, and the 3 Days After Eid al-Adha [11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhu’l Hijjah].

Abu Sa`id al-Khudri (Allah be pleased with him) reports that, “The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) forbade fasting on two days: the Eid of Fitr and the Eid of Slaughtering.” [Bukhari and Muslim]

And the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) said, “The days of slaughtering are days of eating, drinking, and remembrance of Allah Mighty and Exalted.” [Muslim]

 The Sunnahs of the Day of Eid:
  The Sunnahs of the Day of Eid al-Adha include:
  1. To adorn oneself according to the Shariah, by:
a. Performing ghusl (this is a confirmed sunnah for the Eid prayer);
b. Brush one’s teeth, using a miswak if possible;
c. Apply perfume;
d. Wear the best clothing one possesses, without excess. White, when available, is optimal;

2. To wake up early, in order to prepare for the sunnas of the day;
